“It took me over 50 years to realise I had ADHD and the accumulated symptoms had nearly killed me. The Dojo is everything I wished had existed when I started researching my problems”
– Alastair Cassie, Founder
My journey to the Dojo
My childhood was riddled with confusion, frustration and, not thinking I was good enough, no matter how hard I tried or how bad I felt when I couldn’t achieve what I wanted.
A familiar story to most – we didn’t have the luxury of knowing what was really wrong and have the label of ADHD – instead we had to make do with “Disruptive”, “Bright but doesn’t apply themselves”, “Lazy”, “Needs to focus”, “Untidy”, “If only they coule produce on paper what they contributed in class”
Gen X didn’t have the distractions of young people today, but neither did we have a clue what might be wrong with us, and neither did anyone around us.
My adult years, until recently, read like an encyclopedia entry of ADHD symptoms. I won’t bore you with all the details, but needless to say, my mental and physical health were pushed to the brink on many an occasion.
When I eventually joined up all the ADHD dots, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into finding solutions to all of my problems. Crikey, was I in for a disappointment.
If I wanted productivity planners, nutrition advice, or to scroll through endless memes describing problems rather than offering solutions, then I was sorted. If I wanted to tackle chronic sleep issues or cut my alcohol consumption back (I was a 30-year wine trade veteran) whilst battling self-doubt, I needed to start from scratch.
So here I am. Now an accredited ADHD coach, CPD course creator and an Ambassador for the ADHD UK charity.
